A dog's eyes

At 10 days there's but a glint,
a hint of what lies behind
The lids, born seal'd.

At 8 weeks, the eyes so bright,
sparkling with mischief,
Not a care in the world.

At 1 year they seek your approval,
exchanging glances, a questioning look,
"Master, what is your bidding?"

At 6 years the gaze of experience,
knowing, caring.
Responsibility to his owners.

At 9 a look of contentment,
satisfaction.
Willing to let the quick pace
belong to others.

At 12 there's but a glint,
a hint of what lies ahead.
The eyes, they faintly smile, mostly hope
they'll still be loved and cared for
Until the time the lids once again are seal'd.
