When I was small you woke ahead
And always waited by my bed
On walks you ran ahead of me
But always waited patiently
When I got fast and you got slow
You tried to wait but had to go
It broke my heart to lose you then
But I was sure I’d see you again
So when I’m old and almost done
I won’t be sad ‘cause I have no doubt
That when I climb that heavenly hill
And look out over that final ridge
You’ll be waiting once again
Out on the rainbow bridge
