Doing my time

I sit and watch the world go by,
Wondering what it would be like,
To run in the grass and play with the kids
And be petted and loved like the other dog is.

To live in the house and be clean and dry,
With a warm, soft bed where I could lie.
I’d be happy to share with the little guy,
The cute tiny dog who lives inside.

But my home is a kennel at the back of the yard,
With an old wooden dog house ... the floor so hard.
I never get out for walks or play,
I stay in this kennel day after day.

The loneliness haunts me and I fear,
The days have gone by and turned into years.
I’m longing for freedom, I committed no crime.
I’m just a big dog, doing my time.
