Dealing with the loss of a dog?

Dealing with the loss of a dog? Here are 10 tips to help you grieve

Dealing with the loss of a dog can feel impossible. Here are some tips to help manage the pain.

There are few things worse than losing a beloved pet. As a loyal and loving family member, you become accustomed to sharing daily life with your four-legged friend. When they go for the final walk across the Rainbow Bridge, the pain can seem unmanageable. If you recently lost a pup, here are 10 ways to help you deal with the heartbreaking loss of a dog.

Allow Yourself Time to Grieve

Like losing anyone in your life, time is necessary for grieving. While there are always a million things on your to-do list, allowing yourself the time and space to grieve is crucial. There is no “set” amount of time for grieving a pet; take as much time as you need to fully experience your emotions.

Researchers reveal losing a dog can be as hard as losing a loved one

If you’ve loved and lost a dog before, you know that it’s an incredibly painful experience. After all, a pet isn’t just an animal you own – it’s someone you consider a member of your family. You share a special bond with them, and they become your best friend and companion. Losing a dog can bring deep sadness.

Many times, dog owners need time to grieve and process the loss of their beloved pets before being able to move on. Those around them who have not experienced this pain may not understand. They might tell a grieving “pet parent” to just get over it since it’s “only a dog.” However, this only serves to worsen the pain.

Now, science has proven that mourning the loss of a much-loved dog is not unusual and is, in fact, a real and valid experience. In fact, this research suggests that overcoming the death of a passed pet may be harder than healing from the passing of a human. Here’s what we’ve learned from this study on why it can be so hard to overcome losing a dog.
5 Reasons Why Losing A Dog Is As Hard As Losing A Loved One

“Sometimes losing a pet is more painful than losing a human because, in the case of the pet, you were not pretending to love it.” – Amy Sedaris

1. Bonding

According to the Official Journal of the Human Behavior and Evolution Study, we forge bonds with our pups that are very comparable to the bonds we form with people. Our brains interpret these bonding activities in the same way. In other words, our bodies produce the exact same hormones when we bond with dogs as when we bond with people.

This is why your pups begin to feel just like family to you The same chemical processes are taking place that would if you were speaking to a family member! In the case of losing a dog, you have to let go of a creature you have deeply bonded with.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain does keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done
For this - the last battle -can't be won.

You will be sad I understand
But don't let grief then stay your hand.
For on this day, more than the rest
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.

Why losing a dog can be even more painful than the death of a loved one

Has a friend ever confided in you that the loss of their dog caused more grief than the death of a close relative? Have you ever felt this way yourself?

Society has conditioned us to feel ashamed of such emotions, but research suggests we are more than justified when we deeply mourn the loss of a furry friend.

When our first family dog, Spike passed away, my father suffered terribly. He would come home from work and just sit in his car, unable to face walking through the door without our little Poodle mix to greet him. He took long walks and visited online pet loss support groups. He woke up crying in the night.

This is what Grief feels like

Don’t judge it
Don’t rush it
Don’t dismiss it
Don’t suppress it
There is no Rulebook for Grief.
It comes in waves. And tonight I pray for the ones who feel as though they’re drowning.

Letter from a dog to his master

"Human, I see that you are crying because it was my time to leave. Do not cry please, I want to explain some things to you.

You're sad because I've left, and I'm happy because I met you. How many like me die every day without having met someone special? Animals sometimes spend so much time alone to our fate! We only know the cold, the thirst, the danger, the hunger. We have to worry about how we will get something to eat and where we will spend the night sheltered. We see many faces every day that pass without looking at us, and sometimes it is better that they do not look at us before they realize that we are there and mistreat us.

My dear human

I see that you are crying, for it is my moment to leave. Don't cry, please. I want to explain some things to you. You're sad because I left, but I'm glad I met you. How many dogs like me die daily without meeting someone special like you?

I know it saddens you my departure, but I had to go now. I want to ask you not to blame yourself for anything. I heard you sobbing that you should have done something else for me. Don't say that, you've done a lot for me! Without you, I would have known nothing of the beauty I carry with me today.

Until we see each other again

I sure haven't felt well lately,
This body of mine is simply worn out,
I try not to let my owner know,
At nights while he sleeps I pout,
15 years is a longtime
For a dog to live or so they say,
I have had the best life,
I love my owner in every way,
We always have the best of times
But lately I have really slowed down,
I heard the vet say something about Cancer,
And for it no cure has been found,
My owner doesn't 8 himself today,
There are many tears streaming down his face

Why dogs come into our lives

Dogs enter our life and change us forever, not only they teach us what unconditional love is, but they have an incredible power to radically change our life, and make us better human beings. They are so much more than pets; they are companions, friends, a source of comfort, and sometimes even a great therapist during a bad day. They may be a responsibility that others cannot bear, but for those of us who have experienced what it means to have a dog, they are family.

Probably often we wonder why this particular dog enters our life and does it at a particular time of our life. Twist of fate, or perhaps just a coincidence? Regardless of whether you thought about choosing a breed, or just adopting any dog, what matters is when and why the dog appeared in your life. Was it a gift – a surprise from a loved one, or a form of consolation after a difficult period, illness or loss. And what happened next? And I assume that contrary to appearances many wonderful things happened.

They tell you ...

They tell you not to cry.
They tell you that it's just a dog, not a human being.
They tell you that the pain will be over.
They tell you that the animals don't know that they have to die.
They tell you that it's important not to let him suffer.
They tell you that you can have another one.
They tell you it's going to happen to you.
They tell you that there is more pain.
But they don't know how many times you've looked into your dog’s eyes.

Pope Francis said that all animals can go to Heaven!

This story is something you should be happy about because according to Pope Francis, animals can go to heaven after all.

Here’s how it came about. Pope Francis talked to a boy who is mourning the death of his dog. He told him not to worry because animals can go to heaven.

His exact words, were … “one day, we will see our animals again in the eternity of Christ,” and “paradise is open to all of God’s creatures.”

A lot of people are confused because there is a long-standing theological position that animals don’t have souls, meaning, they just stop exiting after their deaths – though this is not a doctrinal statement.

“If the Pope did mean that all animals go to heaven, then the implication is that animals have a soul, Christine Gutleben, the senior director of faith outreach at the Humane Society of the United States, told the Times.

And if that’s true, then we ought to seriously consider how we treat them. We have to admit that these are sentient beings, and they mean something to God.”
