Trust … a deadly disease

There is a deadly disease stalking your dog, a hideous, stealthy thing just waiting its chance to steal your beloved friend. It is not a new disease, or one for which there are inoculations. The disease is called "Trust".

 

You knew before you ever took your puppy home that it could not be trusted. The breeder who provided you with this precious animal warned you, drummed it into your head. Puppies steal off counters, destroy anything expensive, chase cats, take forever to house train, and must never be allowed off lead!

 

When the big day finally arrived, heeding the sage advice of the breeder, you escorted your puppy to his new home, properly collared and tagged, the lead held tightly in your hand.

The light of hope

The door swings open, and the white fluorescents flood the kennels with light.

The youngsters hurriedly blink the sleep out of their eyes as they adjust to the brightness of morning.

The older ones stretch and yawn somberly, with less anticipation ... they've been here too long.

The young ones scamper towards the sounds of footsteps on the gray cement, excitement on their faces.

The older ones sit, heads drooping, eyes cast downward.

Another day ... there is no hope.

The youngsters jump up and down, desperate to be taken ...

A home.

Hope dances merrily in their every movement, electricity charging through them as the footsteps stop in front.

Die Wiederbelebung eines Hundes mit dieser Checkliste darf nur beim Vorliegen eines - definitiven - Herzstillstands durchgeführt werden! Sie erhalten hier alle Informationen, die im Notfall zur Wiederbelebung (Reanimation) ihres Hundes notwendig sind. Dennoch: Das Einüben der Wiederbelebung vorab im Rahmen eines Erste-Hilfe-Kurses ist sehr sinnvoll und sollte auch danach immer wieder, idealerweise zunächst nur an einem Stofftier geübt werden. Denn niemals (!) die Herzdruckmassage am lebenden Hund üben! Wenn Sie diese Wiederbelebung-Checkliste in einem Notfall gebrauchen, bleiben Sie ganz ruhig. Gehen Sie die einzelnen Phasen durch. Es ist zu schaffen!

 

NOTFALL-CHECKLISTE: Wiederbelebung beim Hund

 

Bleiben Sie ganz ruhig. Ihr Hund und Sie können durch Alles was jetzt kommt nur gewinnen. Atmen Sie tief durch. Verschieben Sie den Stress um eine viertel Stunde. Sprechen Sie mit Ihrem Hund: Sagen Sie ihm dass Sie ihm helfen. Beginnen Sie mit der Wiederbelebung.

 

Bei der Wiederbelebung des Hundes hat die Herzwiederbelebung höchste Priorität, deshalb erfolgen vorab nur dringendste Vorbereitungsaktionen (z.B. nur nach dem Ertrinken die Lunge entleeren oder nach Ersticken an einem Fremdkörper wird der Heimlich-Griff angewendet), ansonsten aber sofort ohne Zeitverlust mit der Herzwiederbelebung anfangen.

Feuerwehrmann rettet Hund mit Mund-zu-Schnauze-Beatmung

Die Hundebesitzerin Crystal Lamirande aus Santa Monica, Kalifornien, war gerade auf dem Weg nach Hause, als ihr auf dem Weg einer ihrer Nachbarn entgegenkam und mitteilte, dass es in ihrer Wohnung brennt. Die Frau eilte zu ihrer Wohnung, in der sich noch ihr Hund Nalu befand. Dichter Rauch und Flammen ließen es jedoch nicht zu, dass sie ihren Hund befreien konnte.
Die Feuerwehr erreichte kurz darauf das Gebäude und ein Feuerwehrmann entdeckte den Hund im Schlafzimmer, brachte ihn sofort nach draußen. Zunächst schien es, als gäbe es keine Rettung mehr für Nalu. Doch der Feuerwehrmann Andrew Klein wollte nichts unversucht lassen. 20 Minuten lang versuchte er den Hund ins Leben zurückzuholen, zuletzt sogar mit Mund-zu-Schnauze-Beratung. Ein Wunder geschah: Der kleine Hund begann wieder zu atmen, konnte kurz darauf sogar wieder laufen und ist inzwischen wieder vollständig genesen.

In the 24 hours since the following occurred, I can hardly believe the outpouring of comments and feelings that it has evoked.

 

It all began 6 months ago and came to a head when I attended yesterday's meeting of our local breed club. This incident caused me much heartfelt pain that it made me wonder why I should "even bother."

 

I came close to not renewing my membership - and I am a founding member of this club. To be perfectly honest, the ONLY reason I renewed was because I am the Rescue Coordinator for the club. And I had not attended a meeting since "what happened" happened.

Wenn ein Hund ertrunken ist und keinerlei Lebenszeichen mehr von sich gibt - so ist er dennoch einige Zeit lang nur scheintot. In diesem Zeitfenster können wir ihn noch zurückholen. Deshalb versuchen Sie es! Retten Sie ihren Hund! Dazu müssen Sie eine Reihe von Notfallmaßnahmen in der richtigen Reihenfolge durchführen. Geben Sie nicht auf! Ertrinken ist eine Zeitlang reversibel. Der Versucht lohnt sich immer!

 

Die Überlebenschancen des Hundes beim Ertrinken hängen dabei ganz wesentlich vom Verhalten des Notfallhelfers vor Ort und dem Faktor Zeit ab. Umso besser Sie Bescheid wissen - umso besser können Sie helfen.

Rettung ist möglich! Diese Dokumentation zeigt Ihnen, wie Sie Ihren Hund vor dem Ertrinken retten!  Wenn der verunglückte Hund an Land ist, muss als erstes und sofort (!) die eigentliche Todesursache - das Wasser in der Lunge, das den Hund erstickt hat und den Sauerstoffaustausch totbringend verhindert - entfernt werden (siehe unten Punkt 2.) . Danach müssen Herz und Atmung wieder in Gang gebracht werden. Diese Dokumentation soll den Hundehalter in die Lage versetzen, den vermeintlich toten und ertrunkenen Hund wiederzubeleben und zu retten.

The unwritten rules of dog showing

1. After trying forever to obtain that elusive second major, you have no problem getting the third major the next day.
2. The novice people that enter every show and always show up even if the breed judging is at 8 am and the show is a six hour drive will not show up when the count is exactly a major. Or if they do, the dog that finished yesterday will be moved up and break the major anyway.
3. If you attempt to build a major, one of the extras will win, never the dog the major was worked around.
4. The day you don't take an umbrella or raincoat to the show because the weather is beautiful at your house, is the day it is raining (or snowing) at the outdoor show site.
5. Although all dog shows have lots of vendors, the day you forget the tack box is the day there are NO vendors on the premises selling show leads.

As I arrived at the Bridge, I faced all the animals that had gone there before me.

 

Before each of us go to the Bridge, we live our lives like the squares of a quilt, mirrored in the eyes of the animals awaiting us. An animal Angel sits before each of us sewing our quilt squares together in a tapestry that is our life. But as my animal Angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was.

 

They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life as a rescuer that had been difficult, the challenges I was faced with in my quest to save lives and the times I had been tempted to take the easy way out and avoid the controversy rather than speak for the animals that could not speak for themselves.

When I was a kid I purchased a book called "The Faithful Friend". One of my favorite selections is titled "All The Good Dogs" by George and Helen Papashvily. I am sending this in the memory of Trold, and all the good dogs.

 

"What purpose did they serve, all the good dogs that once ran through the world and wait now in the shadowy quiet of the past?

 

They lightened our burdens and drove away our enemies and stayed when others left us. They gave aid and comfort, protection and security. They held a mirror wherein we might see ourselves as we long to be. They gave us a glimpse of the world beyond the narrow confines of our own species.

Erstickungsanfall

 

Der Hund droht zu ersticken - er hat etwas verschluckt, das seine Atemwege blockiert. Was tun, wenn Hund erstickt? Es droht eine Sauerstoffunterversorgung, Erstickung und Atemstillstand. Ohne lebensrettende Sofortmaßnahmen würde der Hund sterben. Es ist dabei insbesondere darauf zu achten, ob nicht schon ein Herzstillstand eingetreten ist und dieser als Sofortmaßnahme behandelt werden muss. Der Ersthelfer am Unglücksort übernimmt die notfall-medizinische Erstversorgung des Hundes und organisiert den unverzüglichen Transport zum Tierarzt.

Wenn der Hund zu ersticken droht. Ein Fremdkörper blockiert seine Atemwege.

The old dog

"12 year old female Border Collie. Her time is nearly up. Very loving, gives kisses freely. Somebody please help this dog."

 

I read that and it got to me. For what reason did a loving 12 year old Border Collie end up in a shelter? Well ... It wasn't something that I could concentrate on because we can't take the dog into our rescue. We had no room. As always; there is no room. I shook my head sadly but did not delete the post. She was a long way from here. Maybe there was a rescuer nearer that would take her, or she would get adopted ... but she's 12 years old. It can be very hard to find a home for a dog that old - and there are a lot of younger ones who need our help just as badly, who would be easier to place. We would probably have her for a long time while others were put down waiting to come into rescue. But it’s not her fault she's 12 and ended up in a shelter. Age should not be a penalty. I turned my computer off. I couldn't think about it. We had no room for another dog of any age right now. Instead, I searched for ways to take this dog into rescue; to find someone who could help but met without success.

The new foster

I look into your eyes, so full of hope as they gaze at me unwavering. I can see and I can feel your longing to love and trust - and I can feel your apprehension.

 

I watch as you tentatively step in the room, the feel of carpet soft and unfamiliar, the coolness of the air a balm to your soul. I detect a tiny quiver of excitement - "What is this place? Do I get to stay here?"

 

Endearingly you touch the toys with your nose - "Is it all right - are these for me?"

 

Your eyes flicker back and forth watching the others. "They're not scared - should I be?"

Der Welpe klein und putzig

macht die Wohnung oft noch schmutzig.

Ein Würstchen hier und eine Pfütze dort

wischt man es schnell fort.

Doch schimpfen mit ihm tut man nicht

was kann er denn dafür, der kleine Wicht.

Fröhlich mit dem Schwänzchen wedelt

wird dabei der Teppich gleich veredelt.

So ist das mit dem kleinen Hündchen

man kann putzen jedes Stündchen.

A wolf story

A wolf story with all her big brothers and sisters off to school, our ranch became a lonely place for our three-year-old daughter, Becky. She longed for playmates. Cattle and horses were too big to cuddle and farm machinery dangerous for a child so small. We promised to buy her a puppy but in the meantime, "pretend" puppies popped up nearly every day.

 

I had just finished washing the lunch dishes when the screen door slammed and Becky rushed in, cheeks blushed with excitement.

"Mama!" she cried. "Come see my new doggy! I gave him water two times already. He's so thirsty!"

I sighed. Another of Becky's imaginary dogs.

"Please come, Mama!" She tugged at my jeans, her brown eyes pleading, "He crying and he can't walk!"

"Can't walk?" Now that was a twist. All her previous make- believe dogs could do marvelous things. One balanced a ball on the end of it's nose. Another dug a hole that went all the way through the earth and fell out on a star on the other side. Still another danced on a tightrope. Why suddenly a dog that couldn't walk?

"All right, honey," I said. By the time I tried to follow her, Becky had already disappeared into the mesquite. "Where are you?" I called.

"Over here by the oak stump. Hurry, Mama!"

New lamps for old

There is a wonderful sequence in "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp" where Aladdin has won riches, a kingdom, and the love of his princess with the help of a genie who resided inside an old, battered lamp. An evil wizard dresses up as a street vendor and offers new, shiny lamps as a free trade for old ones. Aladdin's princess has no feeling for the old lamp and all it has done, so she hurries out and trades it for the new, improved model. The evil wizard runs off cackling - the power of the lamp is now his. Horrible events ensue until Aladdin is able to get his old lamp back and make the world right again.

 

An acquaintance called me the other night to talk about the new dream home he and his wife are completing. In their 11 years of marriage, they have celebrated the births of two children, developed careers, and shared the good times and sad times with their small family. Through all of it, a little cocker spaniel named Daisy has been there. She was their first gift to each other and has guarded each of their children's early steps, warned them valiantly of strangers approaching, shared their tears and laughter. Daisy has always been in inside dog, kept within the walls of the home, the heart of the family. Daisy is getting older, has problems with bladder control, and is losing her teeth. She doesn't want to play with children anymore, preferring to sleep at someone's feet and feel their hands patting her gently. Daisy has turned into the old lamp.
