Top 10 reasons to adopt a rescued Lab

10. In a Word - Housebroken

With most family members gone during the work week for 8 hours or more, housetraining a puppy and its small bladder can take a while. Puppies need a consistent schedule with frequent opportunities to eliminate where you want them to. They can’t wait for the boss to finish his meeting or the kids to come home from after school activities. An older lab can “hold it” much more reliably for longer time periods, and usually the rescue has housebroken the Labs before they are adopted.

 

9. Matching Socks

With a “chewy” puppy, you can count on at least 10 mismatched pairs of socks and a variety of unmentionables rendered to the “rag bag” before he cuts every tooth. You can also expect holes in your carpet (along with the urine stains), pages missing from books, stuffing exposed from couches, and at least one dead remote control. No matter how well you watch them, it will happen - this is a puppy’s job! An older dog can usually have the run of the house without destroying it.

I think I’ve finally found my man

I miss my dog …

I miss my dear and faithful friend.

We traveled through the years together, she and I,

each watching the orther grow older.

She was the keeper of my heart –

aware of my ups and downs,

responsive to my needs,

affectionate and true.

My life is different now witout her.

It’s strange to come home

and not heart her familiar bark,

or see that tail wagging furiously

back and forth – so happy just to see me.

I sit … expecting her to run over and nudge me,

or put the head in my lap …

but, she does not come.

She is not there.

This place is not the same without her.

Still, I know that I was lucky

to have her for so long.

I keep telling myself that.

But, whenever I feel like it,

I’m going to have myself a good cry,

and I won’t be shamed by my tears.

It’s the least I can do

to mourn such a loyal and devoted friend.

Als der Regenbogen verblasste

Als der Regenbogen verblasste, da kam der Albatros und er trug mich mit sanften Schwingen weit über die Sieben Weltmeere, behutsam setzte er mich an den Rand des Lichts.

Ich trat hinein und fühle mich geborgen.

Ich habe Euch nicht verlassen, ich bin Euch nur ein Stück voraus.

Kennst Du Smiley? / Do you know Smiley?

Smiley ist ein Golden Retriever,  der bei einem Massenzüchter (im Englischen „puppy mill“ genannt) geboren wurde und dort die ersten 2 Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte, bevor er von der Kanadierin Joanne George, eine professionelle Hundetrainerin, gerettet und adoptiert wurde. Geboren wurde er ohne Augen. (Seine Augenhöhlen wurden zugenäht, damit sie sich nicht entzünden.)

Inzwischen ist Smiley 15 Jahre alt, ein Therapiehund, der Kindern mit geistiger und körperlicher Behinderung hilft, und hat einen Fellbruder namens Pal, der ebenfalls blind ist.

Golden Retriever Smiley was born without eyes. He spent his first 2 years in a puppy mill. Joanne George, a professional dog trainer, rescued him from the puppy mill and adopted him. Now he’s 15 years old, a certified child therapy dog and has a fur brother named Pal, who is also blind.
