#1 - Tone of Voice

Dogs might not be fluent in your language, but they’re experts at picking up tone of voice. A scientific study published in 2016 found that dogs’ brains react based on the tone of voice of the person talking to them.

In the study, the reward centers in the dogs’ brains became activated when the person used a high-pitched, happy voice. The dogs were glad to greet the happy-sounding person, but they reacted negatively or ignored people who spoke with deep or angry-sounding voices.

Two Heroes

I was looking to get a new pup. So, I asked my very best friend.

He said get a German Shepherd; they are loyal til the end.

He sent me to this breeder he knew. I went over to his home.

He had a litter of brown and black pups in a large pen is where they roamed.

I didn’t know a lot about the breed, but I did see one in the park.

He always guarded the water bowl and had a real loud bark!

I asked him lots of questions, this breeder knew his stuff.

He picked up one in particular and said this guy is really tough.

Has a friend ever confided in you that the loss of their dog caused more grief than the death of a close relative? Have you ever felt this way yourself?

Society has conditioned us to feel ashamed of such emotions, but research suggests we are more than justified when we deeply mourn the loss of a furry friend.

When our first family dog, Spike passed away, my father suffered terribly. He would come home from work and just sit in his car, unable to face walking through the door without our little Poodle mix to greet him. He took long walks and visited online pet loss support groups. He woke up crying in the night.

At iHeartDogs.com we often write about coping with the loss of a beloved pet. We do this because we understand that saying goodbye is one of the hardest things you will ever have to do, and we hope that somehow our words can provide a bit of comfort.
