Because you chose me,

I choose you.

I will never leave you

but cherish you and, if need be,

give my life for you.

 

When you turn your attention to me

or even think of doing so,

I forget all else and hasten to you

the energy of my wagging tail

rippling through my body

in gentle waves of ecstacy.

 

Should too much time pass

since you last noticed me,

I patter into your space.

I reach out in friendly well-used

glances, sounds and nudges

that I know are in touch with your heart

so that maybe - just maybe -

these will trigger a loving glance

or, joy of joys,

you will speak a word,

or call me by my name!

 

When you leave me,

even though you assume me of your return,

I am incomplete.

I yearn for your return.

My internal clock is set for your footsteps

and when you reappear

my joy bursts out in licking - leaping -

sniffing-snuggling-testing-teasing-running-

wiggling-feeling-glowing-overflowing.

 

I can stand anything except to feel unloved by you.

Those "no's", little cuffs and occasional rebuffs

are more than I can bear.

Not because they hurt

but because all is not well between us.

However, one loving reconciling stroke from you

and all is forgiven.

from one whose name, (is it any wonder?)

is mine spelled backwards,
